MARITIME TRANSPORT STAKEHOLDERS SHARE VIEWS ON IMPACT OF FUEL PRICE INCREASE

By Our Reporter

Stakeholders in the maritime transport sector in the regions of Mwanza, Kigoma, and Kagera on April 16, 2026, have come forward to express their views on the impact of rising fuel prices, emphasizing the need for appropriate measures to safeguard public interests and ensure the sustainability of the service.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), coordinators of the meetings stated that the sessions were organized to collect stakeholders’ opinions before any decision is made regarding adjustments to maritime transport fares.

They added that the meetings were convened in accordance with Section 29 of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Act, Cap 415, which requires TASAC to engage stakeholders in processes that call for public input.

Speaking during a meeting held in Kagera Region, the Acting Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Mr. Isaya Tendega, commended TASAC for organizing the meetings at an appropriate time, following recent changes in fuel prices that could increase operational costs for marine transport and affect citizens’ livelihoods.

Some stakeholders who participated in the meeting stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between operational costs and passengers’ ability to afford fares, in order to avoid placing an additional burden on citizens, particularly those who rely on maritime transport for their daily activities.

Additionally, other stakeholders proposed alternative strategies to reduce operating costs, including the use of alternative energy sources and improving the efficiency of transport vessels, rather than relying heavily on fare increases.

TASAC has announced that it will continue to receive stakeholders’ views until April 26, 2026, before finalizing a decision-making process that will be inclusive and transparent, taking into account all stakeholder input as well as prevailing market conditions.
