GOVERNMENT TO UPGRADE TAZARA RAILWAY–KATAMBI.






In strengthening the cooperation between Tanzania, Zambia, and China—initiated by the founding leaders of these nations including Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Kenneth David Kaunda, and Mao Zedong—the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan has entered into an agreement with China to construct and upgrade the TAZARA railway, which was originally built between 1970 and 1975.

This was stated by the Minister for Home Affairs, Patrobas Katambi, during a memorial event honoring 65 Chinese experts who participated in the construction of the TAZARA railway.

Speaking at the cemetery located in Gongolamboto Military Area in Dar es Salaam, Minister Katambi said the foundation of cooperation established by the founding leaders in the fields of economy, politics, technology, and culture has been further strengthened under President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He noted that Tanzanians have witnessed various development projects implemented and supervised by Chinese experts.

Also speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation responsible for East African affairs, James Millya, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for maintaining strong bilateral relations with Tanzania. He emphasized that Tanzania deeply respects China, noting that even when China was still developing, it supported Tanzania—not only financially but also through experts, some of whom lost their lives.

The Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, said that China continues to uphold the historic relationship established by the founding leaders of China, Tanzania, and Zambia, and reaffirmed China’s involvement in various development projects.

*Government Launches 15274 Hotline to Ease Access to National ID Information

Dar es Salaam: The Government has urged citizens to use their mobile phones by dialing *15274 to easily access information related to National Identification Cards (NIDA). Speaking today, December 29, 2025, the Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, said the service will enable citizens to check the status of their National ID cards, including whether the card has been produced or not, with feedback provided within five days. He explained that through this number, citizens will receive important information regarding their National IDs, adding that damaged ID cards are expected to be replaced starting February 2026. “By using this number, you will be able to get information on whether your ID card has been produced. I emphasize that damaged ID cards will be issued in February 2026,” said Minister Simbachawene.
