Government Strengthens Clean Energy and Rural Electrification, Citizens Benefit More

Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, has said that the Government continues to strengthen the use of clean cooking energy and expand access to electricity across the country as part of implementing the Ministry of Energy’s 2026/2027 budget.

She made these remarks on April 23, 2026, in Parliament in Dodoma while responding to Members of Parliament following the presentation of the Ministry’s budget speech for the 2026/2027 fiscal year.

While addressing the concerns, she noted that the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, is a key champion of the clean cooking energy agenda, aiming to ensure that 80 percent of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy by 2034. She explained that usage has already increased from 6.9 percent in 2021 to over 28 percent currently, with these efforts focused on protecting the environment and improving public health.

Furthermore, she stated that the Government has distributed more than 56.4 kilometers of natural gas pipelines, over 300,000 gas cylinders, more than 49,000 gas stoves, and over 7,000 electric cookers. More than 55 institutions have also been provided with clean energy cooking facilities, with a plan to reach over 400 institutions.

In ensuring access to electricity in rural areas, more than 120 out of 143 islands have already been supplied with solar power through subsidies ranging from 45 to 75 percent. This initiative aims to eliminate the use of kerosene lamps and improve the overall quality of life for citizens.
