AFRICAN COMPETITION FORUM URGED TO DELIVER PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS – LONDO
The Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade, Hon. Dennis Londo (MP), has called on members of the African Competition Forum (ACF) to come up with practical solutions, emphasizing that the main goal of such cooperation should be to deliver tangible benefits to citizens, including access to quality goods and services at affordable prices through fair competition.
He made these remarks while delivering his opening speech at the Executive Committee Meeting of the African Competition Forum held in Dar es Salaam on April 13, 2026. He noted that strong competition policies are a key driver of economic transformation and stressed the need for African countries to harmonize their competition policies in order to create a conducive business environment and accelerate industrialization across the continent.
Hon. Londo further emphasized that as Africa continues to integrate through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), there is an urgent need for cohesive competition policies to address cross-border anti-competitive practices that may hinder trade.
He also commended the forum for strengthening the capacity of competition authorities and combating monopolistic practices. These efforts, he said, help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enter markets and compete fairly, thereby boosting innovation and productivity.
Additionally, Hon. Londo stated that Tanzania remains committed to promoting a culture of competition in order to achieve the National Development Vision 2050. He added that the government continues to strengthen regulatory institutions to attract both domestic and foreign investment.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director General of the Fair Competition Commission, Ms. Hadija Ngasongwa, noted that the ACF—comprising 37 member countries—serves as a strong platform for learning, cooperation, and capacity building, particularly on cross-border issues, thus facilitating joint solutions beyond national boundaries.
