VICE PRESIDENT REPRESENTS PRESIDENT DR. SAMIA AT THE OACPS SUMMIT
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, represented the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the 11th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. The summit was held at the Sipopo International Conference Center in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
During the opening session, various leaders emphasized the need for institutional and systemic reforms to enable the OACPS to effectively address current global challenges, including political conflicts, wars, and climate change.
The opening also stressed the importance of member states contributing their dues on time to strengthen the financial independence of the OACPS and ensure it maintains an independent voice in the international community. Additionally, emphasis was placed on effectively utilizing the bloc’s population of approximately 1.5 billion people by empowering them through skills development, innovation, and the use of artificial intelligence to drive development.
Furthermore, the summit highlighted the importance of promoting trade among member states as well as with other regional blocs. It also underscored the need to empower youth and women to actively participate in development activities.
Tanzania’s participation in the summit reflects its continued commitment to actively engage in regional and international platforms, demonstrating its contribution to global development dialogue and international cooperation.
At the summit, the President of Angola, H.E. João Manuel Lourenço, handed over the Chairmanship of the OACPS to the President of Equatorial Guinea, H.E. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
The Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, which comprises 79 member countries, was established in the 1970s to support economic and political cooperation among African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries, many of which were formerly colonized by European nations. Its legal foundation was laid on June 6, 1975, through the Georgetown Agreement. After operating for decades as the ACP Group, it was officially renamed OACPS in April 2020 following amendments to the Georgetown Agreement.
The theme of the summit is: “A transformed and renewed OACPS at the service of an inclusive, sustainable and trust-based multilateralism.” This theme reflects the organization’s strategic transformation towards becoming a strong, self-reliant, and forward-looking international body.
The Vice President was accompanied by several officials, including the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock from the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Hon. Suleiman Masoud Makame; Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. James Milya; Tanzania’s Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea (resident in the Democratic Republic of Congo), Hon. Said Juma Mshana; and Tanzania’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Hon. Jestas Nyamanga.
