The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Emmanuel Nchimbi, on March 19, 2026, led a tree-planting exercise at Sokoine Regional Referral Hospital in Lindi. The event marked the official launch of the International Day of Forests celebrations, alongside the national tree-planting campaign.
Speaking shortly after planting a tree, Nchimbi emphasized the importance of forest conservation in protecting the environment, addressing climate change, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for citizens.
He noted that tree-planting efforts must go hand in hand with proper care and maintenance to achieve the goal of increasing forest cover and improving the environment.
“It is important to plant trees, but even more important to take care of them so they can grow and bring benefits to society and the nation as a whole,” he said.
The Vice President also urged citizens to actively participate in the national tree-planting campaign, describing it as part of the “Green Tanzania” agenda aimed at restoring the country’s natural vegetation.
He added that the government will continue collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure adequate public education on forest conservation and sustainable land use.
The commemorations have brought together environmental and conservation stakeholders from within and outside the country, with the aim of encouraging public participation in protecting forest resources.
The events will run for four days, from March 18 to March 21, 2026, and are expected to culminate at the national level in Lindi Region.
