TZS 50 BILLION INVESTMENT IN MPOMVU SUBSTATION STRENGTHENS POWER SUPPLY IN THE LAKE ZONE
📌 Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals inspects Mpomvu Power Receiving and Cooling Substation in Geita
📌 Committee satisfied with government investment in strengthening electricity infrastructure
📌 Government to continue improving power distribution to meet demand in the mining sector and other economic activities
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has conducted an inspection visit to the Mpomvu Power Receiving and Cooling Substation located in Geita Region on March 15, 2026, as part of its oversight of the implementation of strategic energy projects aimed at strengthening electricity supply in the country.
Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Subira Mgallu, said the tour was intended to assess the progress of energy projects and ensure that government investments deliver the intended benefits to citizens.
“As the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, we have the responsibility of overseeing the Ministry of Energy to ensure it fully performs its duties. We are satisfied with the investment made in this substation, which plays a significant role in ensuring reliable electricity supply for citizens and economic activities,” said Hon. Mgallu.
She added that the substation has the capacity to receive and distribute approximately 90 megawatts of electricity, while efforts are ongoing to further strengthen power distribution infrastructure, including plans to establish a dedicated power line for the Geita Gold Mine (GGM).
“The power demand for GGM is expected to reach about 70 megawatts by 2035, up from the current 36 megawatts. It is therefore important to continue strengthening electricity distribution infrastructure to meet that demand,” she added.
On her part, the Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, said the government is continuing to strengthen electricity infrastructure in Geita Region due to the rapid growth of economic and social activities, particularly in the mining sector.
“This substation plays a major role in improving electricity supply in Geita Region as well as neighboring areas including Biharamulo and Ngara in Kagera Region, Sengerema in Mwanza Region, and Kakonko in Kigoma Region,” said Hon. Makamba.
The Deputy Minister further noted that the Mpomvu Substation cost approximately TZS 50 billion to construct, an investment that has significantly increased electricity distribution capacity in the area, where current demand has reached 73.64 megawatts.
Previously, Geita Region relied on electricity supply from Shinyanga Region with a capacity of only about 4 megawatts, which was insufficient to meet the growing demand driven by economic activities, particularly mining operations.
Construction of the Mpomvu Power Receiving and Cooling Substation began in 2019 and was completed in 2020, before being officially inaugurated in 2022 by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
