TBS, FCC Meet Alcohol Industry Stakeholders to Address Substandard and Counterfeit Products

The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), in collaboration with the Fair Competition Commission (FCC), has engaged stakeholders in the alcoholic beverages sector to raise awareness on legal requirements, regulations, and standards governing the industry.

The meeting, held on March 27, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, also aimed to discuss and identify challenges faced by stakeholders in complying with legal requirements and competition issues, with a view to finding practical solutions.

Speaking during the opening session, Acting Director General of TBS, Engineer Yona Afrika, noted that the institutions have been receiving complaints regarding the presence of substandard and counterfeit alcoholic products in the market, largely attributed to dishonest traders.

“These products, if they fail to meet the required standards, can pose serious risks to the health and safety of consumers,” said Afrika.

He added that TBS, in collaboration with FCC, will continue strengthening standards enforcement to ensure product quality and promote fair competition in the market.

On her part, Acting Director General of FCC, Ms. Roberta Feruzi, stated that the presence of substandard and counterfeit alcohol not only undermines fair competition but also leads to consumer complaints regarding value for money and health-related concerns.

She emphasized that the situation also weakens legitimate businesses and disrupts a level playing field for traders who comply with the law.
