The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has officially launched the use of drones to inspect electricity transmission and distribution lines, in a move aimed at improving service efficiency and reducing the time taken to resolve power outages.
The launch took place on March 17, 2026, at TANESCO offices in Ubungo, Dar es Salaam, led by the Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange.
Speaking during the launch, Mr. Twange said TANESCO manages an extensive electricity infrastructure network that requires close monitoring using modern technology.
“We have transmission lines covering approximately 8,500 kilometers, and distribution lines stretching nearly 200,000 kilometers. These networks pass through forests, along roadsides, and across various terrains,” said Mr. Twange.
He emphasized that the company’s core responsibility is to ensure customers experience minimal downtime whenever power disruptions occur and that services are restored promptly.
“Our job is to serve customers by ensuring they have reliable electricity. Today marks the beginning of a technological transformation that will make our work easier,” he stressed.
According to Mr. Twange, despite having systems in place to detect faults, there has been a challenge in quickly identifying the exact location of problems.
He noted that drones will enable faster and more detailed inspections, even before faults occur.
“Today we are introducing this new approach using drones equipped with advanced systems to monitor our electricity infrastructure and detect potential issues before they cause damage,” he explained.
He added that the move will also reduce operational costs and the time previously spent on manual inspections.
“This process used to take a lot of time and resources. Our teams had to travel extensively by vehicles, but now inspections will be completed much faster, even before problems arise,” he said.
On her part, TANESCO Kibamba District Manager, Ms. Salma Yahaya, said the use of drones will address challenges related to time and accessibility in some areas.
“This system will help us deliver services more quickly. Previously, inspections took a long time as we had to physically check each pole. With this technology, we will easily detect issues and plan timely interventions to ensure our customers do not experience power outages,” she said.
The launch of drone technology marks another significant step in TANESCO’s digital transformation efforts, aimed at ensuring reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity services for citizens.
