TAMWA DIRECTOR SAYS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN VEGETABLE VENDORS STILL PERSISTS
The Executive Director of the Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA), Dr. Rose Reuben, has stated that women engaged in selling vegetables continue to face gender-based violence while carrying out their daily activities, a situation that hinders them from achieving their goals.
Dr. Reuben made these remarks earlier today in Dar es Salaam during a capacity-building workshop for women vegetable entrepreneurs organized by TAMWA in collaboration with the CRDB Bank Foundation.
She explained that these women encounter various challenges when sourcing their goods, including theft in the early morning hours and exposure to gender-based violence in market areas.
“They have shared how they face different forms of violence, including physical assault, theft of their goods, and fraud,” said Dr. Reuben.
However, Dr. Reuben noted that through the workshop, participants were equipped with knowledge on how to grow their capital and access loans from CRDB Bank.
She added that the training serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by institutions, women, and government bodies to empower women, support their development, and recognize their contribution to society.
On his part, the Training Manager from the CRDB Bank Foundation, Joshua Mwakalobo, representing the Foundation’s Managing Director, said the initiative aimed at building the women’s capacity and providing them with business education, including strategies to expand their capital.
He further stated that CRDB Bank, through its Foundation, plans to provide affordable loans with low interest rates to support these women entrepreneurs.
