PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE SATISFIED WITH COMPLETION OF CoICT ICT BUILDING AT UDSM
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Culture and Sports has expressed satisfaction with the completion of the new ICT building at the College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT) of the University of Dar es Salaam, saying the project is a significant step toward strengthening Tanzania’s capacity in emerging technologies.
The committee, led by its Chairperson Husna Sekiboko, visited the facility on March 16, 2026 to inspect the progress of the project and confirmed that construction of the building has been completed. Essential equipment for the centre has already arrived and is awaiting installation before teaching and research activities begin.
Speaking during the visit, Sekiboko noted that Artificial Intelligence is among the major technological revolutions shaping the modern world, and Tanzania must position itself to benefit from the opportunities it offers while addressing its potential challenges.
“Technological transformation in computing is enormous and will continue for many years. Some tasks currently performed by humans may eventually be handled by computers,” she said.
She added that projects being implemented by universities across the country demonstrate effective use of public funds and have strong potential to contribute to national economic growth.
“The projects we have visited clearly show that public resources are being used efficiently and can generate significant benefits for the country’s economy,” she added.
On his part, the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Adolf Mkenda, said the government is working to increase the number of experts in the fields of Information and Communication Technology and Artificial Intelligence by sponsoring Tanzanians to study abroad, while also strengthening local infrastructure and modern learning facilities.
He said that through the Samia Scholarship programme, the government has already sent students to leading universities in South Africa and Ireland to study Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and interdisciplinary sciences.
“In addition to sending students abroad, we also have the Indian Institute of Technology Zanzibar where students are enrolled in postgraduate programmes in these fields,” Prof. Mkenda said.
He also encouraged young people to take advantage of the vast opportunities emerging from technological advancement, noting that such developments can open doors for employment and innovation while emphasizing the importance of responsible and safe use of technology.
Speaking about the infrastructure development at the college, he said the completed facilities will increase student enrollment capacity by 351 and have also created 529 jobs, including professional and temporary employment.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam, William Anangisye, said the new AI centre will position the university as a key hub for training and research in modern technologies within the region.
He noted that the building will support advanced research in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and digital innovation, while also strengthening collaboration between the university, industry and international research institutions.
