PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND MINERALS COMMENDS TANESCO FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF KISHAPU SOLAR POWER PROJECT

📌 Committee visits project to assess its efficiency

📌 TZS 118 billion invested in the project

📌 Calls for speedy implementation of Phase Two

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has commended the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) for the effective supervision and implementation of the Kishapu Solar Power Project with a capacity of 50 megawatts, being implemented in Shinyanga Region.

The commendation was given by the Committee Chairperson, Subira Mgalu, after the committee visited the project on March 13, 2026, to witness the progress of its implementation and assess the efficiency in the use of government funds allocated for the project.

Speaking after the visit, Mgalu said the project marks an important milestone in transforming the country’s energy sector through the use of renewable energy technology.

“We have visited this solar power generation project and what we see is a major transformation in the energy sector. This is a significant step as, for the first time, Tanzania is generating 50 megawatts of electricity from solar energy,” she said.

She noted that the committee was satisfied with how the funds provided by the government had been utilized effectively to ensure successful implementation of the project.

“As the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, we are satisfied with how the funds allocated by the government for this project have been used. It is clear that the funds have been properly utilized in implementing this project valued at approximately TZS 118 billion,” she explained.

She further said the project has already begun contributing 50 megawatts to the National Grid, a step that helps increase the country’s electricity generation capacity and strengthens the diversification of energy sources.

“The implementation of this project demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring diversified sources of electricity generation. This increases the reliability of power supply in the country,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, said the Kishapu project is being implemented in two phases, with the first phase of 50 megawatts already completed and supplying electricity to the National Grid.

“This project has two phases. The first phase of 50 megawatts has already been completed and is now feeding electricity into the National Grid. The second phase will involve an additional 100 megawatts, bringing the total generation capacity of the project to 150 megawatts,” said Ndejembi.

The committee also urged the Ministry of Energy and TANESCO to continue with plans to quickly begin implementation of the second phase of the project in order to further increase the country’s electricity generation capacity.
