NEW MINING OPPORTUNITIES REACH YOUTH

Mining Commission Announces Projects, Mining Areas and Investment Loans for the 2026/2027 Fiscal Year

 Dodoma

The Mining Commission has announced development projects and various opportunities for young people in the 2026/2027 fiscal year as part of the government’s efforts to create a supportive environment that enables youth to actively participate in the mining sector.

Speaking to journalists in Dodoma on March 16, 2026, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the Mining Commission, Engineer Ramadhani Lwamo, the Director of Mine Inspection and Environment, Engineer Hamisi Kamando, said the Commission has prepared several initiatives aimed at increasing youth participation in mining activities and mineral trading in the country.

He said that among the plans is the continued construction of offices for Resident Mining Officers in regional offices through tenders that will be announced, while encouraging young people to closely follow and utilize the opportunities that will arise during the implementation of these projects.

He also stated that the Commission will continue organizing gemstone auctions and exhibitions while setting aside more mining areas specifically for youth in various regions depending on the types of minerals available.

Furthermore, Engineer Kamando noted that the Mining Commission continues to collaborate with the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) and the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) to facilitate access to geological information and equip young people with skills in using modern technologies for mineral exploration and extraction. The Commission is also working with financial institutions, including banks, to establish mechanisms that will enable youth to access capital for investment in the sector.

Regarding the implementation of the Local Content Regulations in the mining sector, Engineer Kamando said that between July and December 2025, mining companies purchased goods and services worth TZS 3.8 trillion from Tanzanian companies, including those owned or employing youth, after 20 categories of goods and services were specifically reserved for companies fully owned by Tanzanians.

He added that the Mining Commission has also signed an agreement with CRDB Bank on February 23, 2026, aimed at helping small-scale gold miners, particularly youth, access capital to invest in the sector.

On mineral value addition, Engineer Kamando said the government, through the Ministry of Minerals, continues to oversee policies and laws ensuring that minerals produced in the country are processed locally before export. Currently, seven mineral processing plants are operating in the country, creating 273 jobs, many of which benefit young people. Minerals worth TZS 5.802 trillion were processed locally between July and December 2025.

Additionally, he explained that through the Mining for Better Tomorrow (MBT) project, the Mining Commission issued 273 licenses to 183 youth groups between July and December 2025 across several regions including Mara, Kagera, Shinyanga, Morogoro, Dodoma and Njombe. These groups are involved in mining activities such as gold, copper, gemstones, salt and construction minerals. By December 2025, the project had created 2,550 direct jobs for young people.

He further said the government has continued prioritizing small-scale miners by issuing 5,983 licenses between July and December 2025, representing 71 percent of all licenses issued during that period.

He explained that small-scale mining licenses are issued exclusively to Tanzanian citizens, with the majority of applicants being young people aged between 18 and 45 years.

On mining areas, Engineer Kamando said the Ministry of Minerals through the Mining Commission has proposed allocating 65 special areas for small-scale miners in regions including Mtwara, Manyara, Lindi, Morogoro, Dodoma, Tabora, Geita, Shinyanga, Mwanza and Mbeya.

He emphasized that the move aims to provide more opportunities for youth to participate in mining activities and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
