NDEJEMBI DIRECTS EWURA TO INSPECT FUEL DEPOTS TO PREVENT HOARDING

📌 Assures the country has sufficient fuel security, urges uninterrupted supply to citizens

📌 Special task force formed to monitor fuel imports

The Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has directed the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) to ensure that no fuel trader hoards petroleum products under the pretext of waiting for global price increases linked to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, which has affected fuel availability in some countries.

Speaking in Dodoma during a meeting with institutions under the Ministry responsible for the petroleum sector, Hon. Ndejembi stated that Tanzania has adequate fuel security and that the government is well-prepared to ensure continuous supply across all regions. He emphasized that EWURA must ensure that no fuel is hidden in storage facilities.

To further guarantee that all imported fuel reaches the country as per contractual agreements, Hon. Ndejembi has also directed the formation of a special task force. The team will include experts from the Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency (PBPA), EWURA, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), as well as security agencies.

“This team will closely monitor every stage of the importation process to ensure all fuel shipments en route to the country arrive on time without any disruptions. The global fuel market is currently unstable, with prices doubling in some countries. Some traders may be tempted to divert supplies elsewhere. We will not tolerate any breach of the agreements we have with fuel suppliers,” he stressed.

On his part, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy responsible for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dr. James Mataragio, assured Tanzanians that the country has sufficient fuel reserves up to July 2026.

He noted that the government took early measures in collaboration with its institutions to ensure reliable fuel availability at affordable prices. He added that the Ministry will continue overseeing its institutions to ensure timely arrival of shipments and prevent traders from exploiting the situation to increase prices.

Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of PBPA, Mr. Erasto Simon, stated that the country’s fuel supply remains stable. He explained that, including both available stocks and shipments in transit, Tanzania has 474 million liters of petrol sufficient for 78 days, 392 million liters of diesel sufficient for 50 days, and 55 million liters of jet fuel sufficient for 91 days.

Similarly, the Managing Director of TPDC, Mr. Mussa Makame, affirmed that there is adequate fuel both within the country and in transit, noting that the government had already secured supply contracts with vendors in advance.

Meanwhile, EWURA Director General, Dr. James Andilile, said the market remains stable with no inflationary pressure, adding that EWURA will ensure that traders do not hoard fuel in anticipation of global price increases.

He further noted that EWURA continues to collaborate with stakeholders, including importers and distributors, to promptly address any emerging challenges and ensure reliable fuel supply to the public.
