MINISTER GWAJIMA ATTENDS TANESCO WOMEN’S CONFERENCE, PROMOTES CLEAN ENERGY USE

The Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dorothy Gwajima, today participated in the Second Women’s Conference of Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Dar es Salaam, where she emphasized the importance of adopting clean cooking energy to safeguard women’s health and protect the environment.

Speaking at the conference, which aimed to promote the use of clean energy, Dr. Gwajima said the Government will continue to implement strategic measures to empower women through access to education, capital, and environmentally friendly technologies that will enable them to move away from firewood and charcoal use.

She noted that statistics from the 2022 Population and Housing Census indicate that 81.5 percent of households in the country still rely on firewood and charcoal for cooking, a situation that contributes to health risks and environmental degradation.

“Women are the primary victims of unsafe energy use; therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure they have the opportunity to transition to clean energy sources, including electricity,” said Dr. Gwajima.

She also called upon public and private institutions to collaborate in educating communities on the benefits of clean energy, stressing that cooking with electricity is safer and more cost-effective in the long term.

On his part, TANESCO Managing Director, Lazaro Twange, said the company recognizes and values the contribution of women to the institution’s development, noting that women have been instrumental in TANESCO’s achievements at various leadership and operational levels.

He added that the company’s leadership continues to uphold gender equality principles in employment opportunities, training, and promotions, while encouraging women to maintain hard work and solidarity.

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, Twange said TANESCO joins national efforts led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to promote clean energy use, adding that the company plans to distribute electric cookers to its employees and continue encouraging the public to shift away from unsafe energy sources.

He reaffirmed that TANESCO will continue working closely with various stakeholders to ensure the clean cooking energy agenda is effectively implemented.
