GOVERNMENT URGES USE OF MV NEW MWANZA TO BOOST ECONOMY AND TOURISM IN THE LAKE ZONE
The government has called on traders, transporters, and investors to take advantage of the newly built MV New Mwanza for commercial and tourism purposes in order to boost the economy of the Lake Zone.
The vessel, which cost over TZS 120 billion to construct, has the capacity to carry 1,200 passengers, 400 tons of cargo, as well as three large vehicles and several smaller ones. It will operate across major ports surrounding Lake Victoria, including Kisumu (Kenya), Port Bell (Uganda), and Kemondo (Bukoba).
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Mwanza South Port where the ship is docked, the Minister for Sports, Culture and Arts, who is also the Chief Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, said that given the scale of this investment, residents of the Lake Zone, investors, and both small and large-scale traders should utilize the vessel to ensure it delivers meaningful economic returns.
He noted that the government has fulfilled its responsibility by creating a conducive environment for business, investment, and social development, and that it is now up to citizens to make use of the opportunity for the benefit of the nation.
“I urge you, when you see MV New Mwanza, consider it a reliable solution for passenger and cargo transport, and a valuable opportunity for tourism,” said Msigwa.
He added that the government expects tourism to grow rapidly in Mwanza, Bukoba, and surrounding areas, with tourists visiting Mwanza before proceeding to destinations such as Serengeti, Rubondo, Burigi-Chato, and others.
Msigwa further emphasized that traders and investors should view the vessel as a dependable solution for expanding businesses in sectors such as mining, fisheries, cotton, meat, and dairy.
“In the Lake Zone, wake up and seize business opportunities in all areas surrounding Lake Victoria — Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and beyond where the vessel simplifies connectivity. Also explore opportunities in DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Burundi,” he stressed.
According to Msigwa, the successful construction of the vessel is a source of national pride, demonstrating the government’s vision and commitment to investing in major projects that contribute significantly to economic transformation.
“This makes MV New Mwanza not only the largest vessel on Lake Victoria and in the Great Lakes region, but also the largest freshwater vessel in Africa,” he said.
