EWURA Revokes Iyan Energy Licence, Suspends Crescent Energy for Six Months
By Our Reporter
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced the revocation of a petroleum retail licence held by Iyan Energy Limited and the suspension for six months of the licence belonging to Crescent Energy Tanzania Limited after discovering violations of laws and licence conditions.
According to a statement issued by EWURA, the decision followed resolutions made by the Authority’s Board of Directors during its recent meetings.
EWURA stated that the revoked licence is Petroleum Retail Licence No. PRL-2018-269, which had been issued to Iyan Energy Limited to operate a petroleum retail business at Plot No. 26 and 27 along Pangani Road in Tanga City.
Meanwhile, the Board has suspended for a period of six months the petroleum retail licence No. PRL-2022-296 belonging to Crescent Energy Tanzania Limited. The licence had been issued for operating a retail petroleum business at Plot No. 5, Block “N”, Chamakweza Area in Chalinze District, Coast Region.
The statement explained that the decisions were made after EWURA established that the companies had been involved in activities similar to wholesale petroleum trading, which is not permitted under the retail licences they possessed.
EWURA said the actions violate Section 131 of the Petroleum Act, Cap. 392, as well as Regulations 9 and 11 of the Petroleum (Wholesale, Storage, Retail and Consumer Installation Operations) Regulations, Government Notice No. 150 of 2022.
Public Warning
In its statement, EWURA has also warned the public that engaging in any form of petroleum supply business with the two companies will be unlawful, and that legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the directive.
The Authority further stated that it will continue overseeing the petroleum sector to ensure fair competition and reliable supply of petroleum products in the country, while maintaining a “level playing field” for all stakeholders.
