DEPUTY MINISTER SALOME PRESSES DONGFANG OVER SLOW PROGRESS OF MALAGARASI POWER PROJECT
📌 Issues specific directives to the contractor and project supervisors
The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, today inspected the implementation of the Malagarasi Hydropower Project (49.5 MW) being executed in Uvinza District, Kigoma Region, where she expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the project’s implementation.
While in Mazungwe Village in Uvinza District, Hon. Salome inspected various sections of the project including the construction of the dam embankment and river diversion works, the powerhouse building, and workers’ camps. During the visit, she noted that there were not enough workers at the site as stipulated in the contract.
Following the observation, the Deputy Minister directed the contractor, Dongfang Company from China, to increase the number of workers and construction equipment, and to ensure that a workers’ camp is built within one month.
She also instructed the contractor to submit a new work implementation schedule.
Furthermore, Hon. Salome directed project supervisors from the consulting contractor and TANESCO to relocate to the project site within one month in order to closely supervise the implementation of the project.
“President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Ministry of Energy to generate 8,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030. We will not allow anyone to delay us in achieving these goals. Contractor, ensure the project is completed by October 2027 as stipulated in the contract,” emphasized Hon. Salome.
She also instructed the consulting contractor, Multiconsult Norge AS of Norway and Norplan from Tanzania, to ensure they closely supervise the contractor so that the project is completed on time and according to the required standards.
On her part, the Uvinza District Commissioner, Dinah Mathamani, said the district leadership will closely follow up on the directives issued by the Ministry to ensure the contractor fulfills the contractual obligations.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy (Electricity and Renewable Energy), Engineer Edson Ngabo, stated that the Malagarasi project was expected to have reached 28 percent progress by now, but it has currently reached only 23 percent.
He added that the Ministry of Energy will continue to closely monitor the contractor to ensure the project is completed within the agreed timeframe.
Other components of the Malagarasi project include electricity distribution to seven villages with 18 sub-villages, which has already been completed 100 percent.
Additionally, the construction of the 132kV transmission line from the project site to Kidahwe has also been completed 100 percent.
