TAMISA Identifies 20 Key Areas for Tanzanians to Cash In on Mining Sector
By Our Reporter, Dar es Salaam
The Tanzania Mining Suppliers and Contractors Association (TAMISA) has outlined 20 key areas recently designated by the Government to enable Tanzanians to actively participate and benefit from the mining sector.
Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, TAMISA Chairperson Mr. Peter Kumalilwa said the initiative aims to open doors for Tanzanians engaged in mining-related activities.
“For the first time in history, the Government has officially announced a list of 20 goods and services that must be provided by companies that are 100 percent Tanzanian-owned within the mining sector value chain through various service provisions,” said Mr. Kumalilwa.
He added that the Government and TAMISA’s objective is to ensure Tanzanians directly benefit from their natural resources through employment, tenders, and other economic opportunities arising from mining operations, as part of implementing the National Local Content Policy.
Some of the highlighted opportunities include the manufacturing of construction materials such as cement, steel bars, and various cables. Other priority sectors include the production of lubricants for heavy and light machinery, manufacturing of explosives for mining operations, legal services, and transportation and logistics services.
“Now is the right time for Tanzanians to seize these opportunities across the 20 designated areas, from supplying goods to manufacturing them locally,” Mr. Kumalilwa emphasized.
However, he acknowledged existing challenges in implementing the Local Content Policy, noting that TAMISA continues to receive reports of some mining companies violating guidelines by awarding tenders to companies not owned by Tanzanians.
“Some mines are not utilizing local suppliers for essential goods and services, while others impose strict conditions that hinder local participation,” he noted.
The Government’s decision officially came into effect on November 15, 2025, following amendments to the 2018 Mining (Local Content) Regulations through Regulation 13A.
Mr. Kumalilwa also commended the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritizing the mining sector, particularly in ensuring Tanzanians secure fair opportunities to supply goods and services under the Local Content framework.
He further praised the Minister for Minerals, Mr. Anthony Mavunde, for effectively overseeing the sector and ensuring Tanzanians benefit from its growth.
“We highly commend the Minister for his efforts in accelerating the growth of the mining sector and creating a conducive environment for Tanzanians to actively participate, including accessing service provision and investment opportunities,” he said.
On his part, TAMISA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Japhet Mussa stated that the Government recognizes the genuine commitment of Tanzanians to fully participate in the mining business and is ready to support efforts to increase local participation in the sector’s value chain.
“We encourage Tanzanians to invest in the mining sector. In collaboration with the Government, TAMISA has been allocated 125 acres in the Buzwagi area of Shinyanga Region for local investors to establish factories that will manufacture various products for the mining market,” said Mr. Mussa.
He added that TAMISA, in partnership with the Government, is prepared to protect the market for goods produced by local investors, noting that investment laws also provide sufficient safeguards. He therefore urged Tanzanians with capital to seize this opportunity, given the assured market within the mining sector.
