ROCK BLOCK SPARKS CONSTRUCTION REVOLUTION IN KILIMANJARO

122 Jobs Created, Government Earns Over TZS 400 Million

The Rock Block mine located in Rombo District, Kilimanjaro Region, has continued to drive transformation in the construction minerals sector by creating 122 jobs and generating more than TZS 400 million in government revenue over the past three years of operation.

The Acting Resident Mines Officer for Kilimanjaro Region, Engineer Abel Madaha, revealed this during a special interview in Rombo District. He noted that the extraction and carving of rocks for the production of bricks and other construction materials form part of the Government’s broader strategy to regulate and develop construction minerals in order to add value and increase national revenue.

He stated that the mine has been contributing to government revenue through fees, royalties, and various taxes paid to institutions including the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the District Council. This contribution has helped stimulate economic development in Rombo and the wider Kilimanjaro Region.

Engineer Madaha further explained that the rocks extracted in the Holili area originated from lava eruptions from Mount Kilimanjaro, making the site a unique and rare source of raw materials found exclusively in Rombo within Tanzania.

Products manufactured at the mine include rock bricks, paving blocks, roofing tiles, cobblestones, wall cladding materials, kerbstones used for road edging, and pozzolana — a special black sand used in cement production and other construction works.

According to Engineer Madaha, rock bricks are three times stronger than ordinary bricks, are resistant to fungi and mold, and have long durability, making them an ideal choice for modern construction projects.

He encouraged investors to explore opportunities in the construction minerals sector, emphasizing its strong potential for economic growth and job creation.

Meanwhile, the Director of Rock Block Limited, Fabian Woisso, said the company employs 72 permanent staff and 50 casual workers, helping to address youth unemployment challenges in the area.

He added that their market is domestic, particularly in the regions of Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Tanga, Dodoma, and Dar es Salaam, where demand for construction materials has been rising due to expanding infrastructure and housing projects.

Furthermore, Woisso noted that the company has invested in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, including the construction of a nine-kilometer road from Holili to Kidondoni, the building of a classroom at Kidondoni Primary School, and the donation of bricks to schools and police stations.

He concluded by urging young people to seize opportunities available in the construction minerals sector, stressing that it has the capacity to increase employment, boost national revenue, and enhance both individual and community development.
