The Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) yesterday disbanded the Board of Trustees of the Seventh-Adventist Church of Tanzania on charges of property mismanagement and failure to discharge duties defined by law.

RITA Chief Executive Frank Kanyusi, told reporters here that the decision to break up the board is based on findings of a special report by the Controller and Auditor General (CAG)’s office presented to RITA yesterday.

The report confirmed that the board grossly failed to discharge its duties defined in law and that it mismanaged church’s properties. He said the special report was made following complaints of members of the church alleging collective gross misconduct of board members.

The CEO explained that the agency disbanded the board because the law calls for such action, adding that the CAG’s report will also be forwarded to other unnamed agencies for appropriate action

Mr Kanyusi said the church has been given seven days to recommend to RITA a ten-member interim committee that will oversee the church activities until a new board of trustees is appointed.

For his part, the Registrar of Civil Societies in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mr. Emmanuel Kihamba, said that his office has already received several complaints from the church concerning various allegations of embezzlement of church property and failure to submit annual reports.

“The conflicts we see in religious institutions often begin as complaints. If those complaints are not addressed in time, they turn into formal grievances, and if the grievances are still not resolved promptly, they eventually result in serious conflicts,” Mr. Kihamba emphasized.

He added that when such conflicts arise within religious institutions, they can lead to divisions, internal rifts, and ultimately a breach of peace.
