PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE ON ENERGY AND MINERALS SATISFIED WITH ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION STATUS

📌 Says a total of 4,400 megawatts of electricity are currently being generated from various sources

📌 Commends Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) for implementing key projects and ensuring the corporation operates profitably

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has expressed satisfaction with the current state of electricity generation in the country, noting that Tanzania now has the capacity to generate a total of 4,400 megawatts, while current consumption stands at 2,071 megawatts. This progress has significantly strengthened the reliability and availability of electricity nationwide.

The remarks were made on February 20, 2026, following the Committee’s inspection tour of electricity projects in Dar es Salaam Region. During the visit, the Committee toured the Ras Kilomoni Power Transmission Station supplying electricity to Zanzibar, as well as the Kinyerezi I and II natural gas-fired power plants.

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Subira Mgalu, stated that substantial progress has been achieved in electricity generation. She noted that TANESCO continues to expand transmission infrastructure, including the line from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project to Chalinze, and from Kinyerezi to Mkuranga, an area with numerous industrial facilities.

“We highly commend TANESCO for the implementation of electricity projects. Power outages have significantly decreased, and there is currently no load shedding. The Committee advises that greater emphasis should now be placed on ensuring electricity reaches the final consumer, particularly in industrial and mining areas,” Hon. Subira explained.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Hon. Innocent Luoga, said they have received the Committee’s directives in line with the vision of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which aims for the country to generate 8,000 megawatts by 2030.

“Electricity demand continues to rise, especially in productive sectors. The Government, through TANESCO, is ensuring electricity access reaches citizens, with a target of connecting approximately 1.7 million new customers annually,” he stated.

The Committee began its tour at the Ras Kilomoni Transmission Station, which has the capacity to transmit 205 megawatts of electricity to Zanzibar. Records show that Zanzibar’s electricity demand in 2025 stood at 140.4 megawatts.
