MINISTER MAVUNDE HOLDS SIDELINE MEETINGS AT INDABA TO ATTRACT INVESTMENT
๐ Cape Town, South Africa
The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, who is leading Tanzania’s delegation to the Mining Indaba Conference, accompanied by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr. Msafiri Mbibo, and Tanzania’s Ambassador to South Africa, Hon. James Bwana, held a series of sideline meetings on February 9, 2026 with leaders, investors, and companies from various countries.
The meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, attracting investment, and promoting the growth of Tanzania’s mining sector.
1. MEETING WITH FINLAND’S MINISTER FOR FOREIGN TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT, HON. SAKARI PUISTO
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to:
Build the capacity of experts in analyzing, interpreting, and validating geoscientific data in Tanzania.
Enhance GST experts’ capacity in laboratory operations, particularly in sample testing to meet international standards.
Collaborate in geoscientific research, especially in High-Resolution Geophysical Surveys.
2. MEETING WITH UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS
The U.S. delegation was led by Mr. Thomas Hardy, Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).
The meeting discussed various areas of strengthening cooperation between Tanzania and the United States, including:
Exploration and value addition of critical and strategic minerals in Tanzania.
The importance of conducting detailed geoscientific surveys, including airborne surveys.
Progress of the gemstone exploration project in collaboration with GST in licenses owned by STAMICO.
The importance of in-country mineral value addition in accordance with the Mining Act, Cap. 123.
Hon. Mavunde emphasized the importance of conducting comprehensive geological surveys and urged the U.S. Government to prioritize this area to facilitate the development of more mining projects in Tanzania. He also stressed the need for sustained collaboration with GST to generate in-depth data that will support the establishment of large-scale mining projects.
3. MEETING WITH RIO TINTO, A GLOBAL COMPANY WITH OVER 150 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
The availability of modern railway infrastructure (SGR), the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), the Mining Policy, and a conducive business environment in Tanzania were cited as key factors attracting global mining giant Rio Tinto to express interest in investing in Tanzania’s mining sector.
Rio Tinto operates in approximately 35 countries worldwide and focuses on exploration and value chains for copper, bauxite (aluminium), and graphite.
Hon. Mavunde emphasized that:
Rio Tinto has been advised to fast-track exploration activities and engage with STAMICO, which holds exploration licenses for priority minerals, to collaborate and facilitate the timely commencement of mining operations.
In accordance with the law, STAMICO is permitted to enter into joint ventures with both local and international investors. Rio Tinto has therefore been warmly welcomed to invest in exploration and subsequently establish a strategic mine that will include the construction of a mineral value addition plant within Tanzania.
