The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, has commended members of the Tanzania Chamber of Mines (TCM) for their contribution to the achievements and development of the mining sector in the country.

Speaking on February 11 in Cape Town during a brief event organized by TCM and sponsored by Alistair, ALN, and NMB Bank, Minister Mavunde said that the sector’s success in contributing to the national GDP, employment, and foreign exchange earnings cannot be separated from the Chamber’s efforts. He noted that the achievements have been driven by strong cooperation between the Government and stakeholders.

Highlighting the sector’s achievements and direction, Minister Mavunde stated that the Government expects to sign 13 investment agreements for major mining projects, including a niobium mining and processing project valued at over TZS 1 trillion. The project is expected to position Tanzania among the world’s leading niobium producers, behind Canada and Brazil.

In light of these achievements, he emphasized the need to strengthen close collaboration, transparency, teamwork, and ensuring that investments in the mining sector bring shared prosperity to Tanzanians and position mining as a pillar of the national economy.

“Let us continue working together through the Vision 2030 agenda — Mining is Life and Wealth — and if possible, go beyond the current 16 percent,” said Mavunde.

On his part, Tanzania’s Ambassador to South Africa, Botswana, and Lesotho, Hon. James Bwana, commended mining companies that have invested in Tanzania and stated that the door remains open for further investment. He also congratulated the Chairperson of the Mining Commission, Dr. Janeth Lekashingo, for effectively representing Tanzania and contributing to various panel discussions during the Mining Indaba conference.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Tanzania Chamber of Mines, Engineer Philbert Rweyemamu, congratulated Hon. Mavunde on his reappointment as Minister for Minerals and for his contribution to strengthening sector governance, which has led to increased mining sector contribution to GDP and foreign exchange growth.

Engineer Rweyemamu requested enhanced government collaboration in various areas, including foreign exchange regulations, local content regulations in the mining sector, and other processes that would accelerate project implementation and facilitate the adoption of advanced technologies not currently available in the country.

He also called for the reinstatement of regular meetings between the Ministry and the Tanzania Chamber of Mines to discuss key issues affecting the mining sector and to fast-track development.

The Tanzania Chamber of Mines comprises members from large and medium-scale mining companies, mining service providers, and women involved in mineral value addition.
