HON. SALOME: TPDC MUST IMPLEMENT DIRECTIVES FROM TOP LEADERS TO COMPLETE STRATEGIC PROJECTS

📌 Commends TPDC for construction of CNG stations; implementation of the clean cooking energy agenda

📌 Emphasizes full participation of local companies in projects

Officials of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) have been urged to practically implement directives issued by the country’s top national leaders aimed at advancing the oil and natural gas sector, including ensuring that negotiations for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project are concluded on time to pave the way for its implementation.

The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, made the remarks on February 20, 2026, in Mwanza while closing a TPDC management meeting that focused on discussing the Corporation’s plans and budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, as well as reviewing its performance.

“Other directives include ensuring that by 2030, the construction of the Natural Gas Pipeline from Kinyerezi to Chalinze is completed, and accelerating the construction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in the Morogoro and Dodoma regions. These are strategic directives that require unity, focus, and speed in implementation from TPDC and its stakeholders. The execution of these directives will be subject to evaluation,” said Hon. Salome.

She further directed the Corporation to ensure adequate availability of petroleum products, including through the development of fuel storage infrastructure, strengthening exploration, production, and distribution of natural gas to industries, institutions, households, and vehicles, as well as completing strategic projects such as the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Regarding the implementation of the Clean Cooking Energy Agenda, Hon. Salome commended TPDC for its efforts in distributing natural gas as a clean cooking energy source in the regions of Mtwara, Lindi, Pwani, and Dar es Salaam, and urged the Corporation to increase momentum in reaching other regions.

She also praised TPDC for its contribution to promoting the use of CNG, thereby reducing congestion at vehicle gas filling stations. She noted that TPDC’s efforts are evident through the construction of a mother CNG station along Sam Nujoma Road in Dar es Salaam, which has continued to encourage private investors to establish their own stations due to the reliable availability of gas. She also commended the issuance of licenses to private companies to invest in the CNG business.

In addition, TPDC was urged not to lag behind in adopting technology and digital transformation, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital systems, and data analytics. The Government expects TPDC to distinguish itself digitally in order to simplify service delivery, reduce bureaucracy, enhance transparency in procurement, lower operational costs, and increase profitability.

“Another important issue for TPDC is to always ensure meaningful participation of local companies by verifying their legitimacy—not only in terms of registration within the country, but also in terms of actual ownership. I also emphasize the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), as oil and gas projects should bring tangible benefits to communities surrounding project areas. You have already made good progress in this area, but greater efforts are required,” she said.

Meanwhile, the representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum and Natural Gas), Engineer Antelimi Raphael, commended TPDC for holding the self-assessment meeting, describing it as an important step in advancing the Corporation.

Earlier, TPDC Managing Director, Mussa Makame, stated that the meeting aimed to deliberate on the Corporation’s plans and budget for the 2026/2027 financial year, as well as to evaluate performance in order to identify and address challenges, thereby enabling projects to proceed at the intended pace.

The meeting also included various training sessions, including leadership training.
