In fulfilling its commitment to restore the value and status of Tanzanite gemstones, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan has unveiled a strategic plan to promote Tanzanite in Qatar, aiming to expand its market reach and attract investment and tourism.

This was stated today, February 25, 2026, by the Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, during his visit to the Embassy of Tanzania in Qatar, where he held discussions with embassy officials.

“The Tanzanite market in recent years appeared to decline slightly, and as a result, prices also dropped. Her Excellency the President has heard the concerns of miners and gemstone traders and directed the Ministry of Minerals to ensure that we restore the global status of this unique gemstone so it can benefit our nation,” said Mavunde.

“We are actively implementing the President’s directives. We will continue promoting Tanzanite and accessing various international markets while clearly affirming that Tanzanite originates from Tanzania and is abundantly available,” he added.

Minister Mavunde emphasized that the government’s strategy comes at the right time, noting that some countries are not aware that Tanzanite originates exclusively from Tanzania. This situation, he said, has negatively affected market opportunities that could also help promote Tanzania’s tourism sector.

He further highlighted that Tanzania is richly endowed with various minerals, including gemstones, but Tanzanite remains unique and a national identity symbol, as it is found nowhere else in the world except Tanzania. He stressed the importance of taking pride in, promoting, and protecting this rare mineral.

As part of efforts to reach a wider audience and showcase investment opportunities in Tanzania, Minister Mavunde agreed to collaborate with the Tanzanian Embassy in Qatar to coordinate the participation of Tanzanian gemstone traders in a mineral exhibition scheduled for April 2026 in Doha.

Earlier, welcoming the Minister to Qatar, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Qatar, Habibu Awesi Mohamed, expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized that numerous opportunities exist within the mining sector which, if fully explored, would generate significant benefits for the nation and contribute to economic growth.
