The Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities), Dr. Jim Yonazi, who also chairs the Project Steering Committee of the Dar Rapid Transit Agency (DART), has said the Government is fully committed to addressing transport challenges in Dar es Salaam to ensure residents receive reliable, efficient, and quality services.

Speaking after the committee conducted an inspection tour of transport infrastructure in the city, Dr. Yonazi noted that the Government has made significant investments to improve the public transport sector.

During the visit, the committee toured the Dar Rapid Transit Agency (DART) and the UDART (the Bus Rapid Transit operating company) to assess progress made through recent investments.

“It is the Government’s intention to ensure that transport services in Dar es Salaam are modern, efficient, and responsive to the needs of the people. We have witnessed the infrastructure that has been put in place and ongoing efforts to improve service delivery,” he said.

Dr. Yonazi revealed that companies have already begun importing new buses, a move expected to position Dar es Salaam among African cities with modern transport systems. He added that many of the buses will run on natural gas, with the Government having established gas refueling infrastructure to guarantee smooth operations.

He further stated that the Government has invested in ICT systems that will enable commuters to use special cards to pay fares electronically, eliminating long queues and enhancing efficiency while reducing inconvenience.

In another development, he assured residents that all grounded buses will be repaired and returned to service to improve availability and reliability.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Dar Rapid Transit Agency (DART), Mr. Said Tunda, said the main goal is to restore confidence and convenience for Dar es Salaam residents by providing dependable transport services.

He also called on daladala operators to continue offering services as the Government engages them in discussions to establish better cooperation mechanisms, particularly for those permitted to operate along BRT corridors.

These initiatives reflect the strong commitment of the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to improve citizens’ lives through robust infrastructure development and enhanced social services.
