DCEA Seizes 299.8 Kilograms of Khat, Destroys 203 Acres of Farms in Same
The Mamlaka ya Kudhibiti na Kupambana na Dawa za Kulevya (DCEA), in collaboration with security agencies particularly the Police Force, conducted a special operation from February 10 to 16, 2026, in Marieni and Mhero villages, Chome Ward, Same District in the Kilimanjaro Region. The operation resulted in the seizure of 299.8 kilograms of illegal drugs (khat/mirungi) and the destruction of 203 acres of khat farms.
Speaking after the operation, the DCEA Commissioner General, Aretas Lyimo, said that seven people were arrested in connection with the illegal activities. He added that despite long-term efforts in public education and regular operations, a few individuals continue to defy the country’s laws.
“The government has delivered essential services including electricity and clean water, as well as agricultural and livestock development projects. Many residents have now shifted to alternative crops such as onions, potatoes, cabbages, avocados, and coffee,” said Commissioner General Lyimo.
He further emphasized that the Authority will continue working closely with village, ward, district, and regional leaders, as well as other stakeholders, to provide education and conduct sustained operations to fully control the khat problem in the Kilimanjaro Region.
On his part, the Mhero Village Executive Officer, Hamad Waziri Hamad, said the operation will greatly benefit the village as it will help many young people abandon the cultivation and use of khat, which had contributed to rising crime and threatened the safety of local residents.
Some Chome residents, including mixed-crop farmer Rafael Kisenge, confirmed the availability of legitimate economic opportunities in the area, citing fertile land suitable for lawful crops.
“I thank the government for establishing a good support system. We receive subsidized farm inputs, and even farming on a small plot has been profitable. There is therefore no reason to engage in illegal farming,” Kisenge said.
Similarly, Mohamed Athuman Mbwabo, a resident and truck driver, noted that following the operations, several residents have abandoned khat farming, while those who defied the law have been arrested and taken through legal procedures.
The DCEA has called on citizens to continue participating actively in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking for the development of society and the nation at large.
