Tanzania Leads Africa in Growth of App-Based Transport Services

Bolt has released its global mobility data report, showing that Tanzania is among the fastest-growing markets in the world and the leading market in Africa in terms of year-on-year trip growth. According to 2025 data, Bolt usage in Tanzania increased by 68%, surpassing Kenya (+35%), South Africa (+25%), Nigeria (+3%), and Ghana (+2%).

The data also shows Tanzania joining top global growth markets such as Switzerland (+173%), Norway (+45%), Slovakia (+37%), and Belgium (+37%) among the fastest-growing Bolt markets worldwide. Overall, Bolt recorded a 46% increase in global trips, driven by rising technology adoption and service efficiency across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Tanzania’s growth is directly linked to the expansion of the country’s digital ecosystem. TCRA 2024/25 statistics show that internet penetration has reached over 72%, while mobile subscriptions have surpassed 63 million, making mobile phones the primary gateway to online services. The GSMA Mobile Economy Africa 2024 report also identifies Tanzania as a fast-growing market, with strong growth in smartphone adoption and mobile internet users expected to increase above the Sub-Saharan African average.

Sector analysts say these changes have transformed urban mobility patterns, especially among young people who prefer app-based services due to safety, reliability, and price transparency.

Speaking on the results, Bolt East Africa General Manager, Dimmy Kanyankole, said the growth reflects the strength of Tanzania’s digital economy. “Tanzania is rewriting Africa’s mobility story. This growth signals strong demand for safe and affordable transport, as well as the pace of digitalization and the innovation of our driver-partners,” he said.

The rising use of digital services is positioning Tanzania as one of Africa’s key hubs for the growth of app-based transportation.
