The Governments of Tanzania and the United States have continued to strengthen their working cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in advanced exploration of strategic minerals, including critical minerals, with the aim of improving management, productivity, employment, and the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Speaking today, January 21, 2025, in Dodoma during a meeting involving a special delegation from the U.S. Embassy led by Mr. Andrew Lentz, Acting U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, together with experts from the Ministry of Minerals, the Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, said the cooperation is being implemented through the U.S. Department of State Energy and Mineral Governance Program. The partnership aims to enhance national capacity in mineral exploration and overall sector management.

Furthermore, on behalf of the Government of Tanzania, Minister Mavunde thanked the Government of the United States, which for decades has been a major development partner to Tanzania through various forms of technical and financial assistance. He emphasized that the U.S. Government has been closely cooperating with Tanzania in various projects covering the education, agriculture, infrastructure, health, good governance, and democracy sectors, among others.

Minister Mavunde noted that the technical assistance provided by the U.S. Government, including working tools such as tablets and other modern equipment for geological data collection and analysis, is a clear demonstration of the strong commitment of the United States to strengthening mining sector governance and supporting Tanzania’s key national development agenda.

He explained that it is now the right time for the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) and the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) to fully utilize this opportunity by enhancing skills and capacity in the collection, storage, processing, and dissemination of geoscientific research data (geo-data) through the use of modern technologies.

Additionally, the Minister said that the cooperation in strengthening joint exploration activities is expected to help identify and develop large-scale critical mineral mines in the Mtwara and Lindi regions. This step will position Tanzania among the world’s major producers of critical minerals. He further stated that by 2050, global demand for critical minerals is projected to reach approximately 4.5 million tonnes, highlighting the growing importance of these minerals compared to current supply levels.

Moreover, the Minister noted that through this partnership, experts from GST and STAMICO will receive training to enhance their capacity to conduct mineral exploration using state-of-the-art technologies, while also improving overall professionalism in all areas related to the management and development of mining projects.

On his part, the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. Andrew Lentz, commended the Government of Tanzania for promoting professional cooperation focused on the application of modern technologies, particularly in the clean and safe energy sector derived from renewable sources, ranging from strategic minerals to those essential for industrial development.

Ambassador Lentz added that the technical support being provided in mineral exploration will significantly improve the use of modern methods and technologies in research, management, and preservation of geoscientific data, thereby positioning Tanzania as a hub for mineral research in East Africa and across the African continent.
