Sauti za Busara 2026 Confirms Full Programme Highlights as Final Tickets Move Fast Ahead of February Festival in Stone Town, Zanzibar

With only two weeks to go until the opening of the 23rd edition of Sauti za Busara, excitement continues to build across Zanzibar and beyond as final preparations intensify for Africa's "Friendliest Festival on Planet Earth," taking place Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th February 2026 with a soft opening on wednesday 4th at its new home, the Mnazi Mmoja grounds in Stone Town.

Following the recent announcement of the festival's relocation to a larger venue, Busara Promotions confirms that the move has enabled the festival to significantly expand its audience capacity, improve visitor flow, and enhance both artist and audience experience. For over 22 years, the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe) served as the festival's symbolic centre. Its thick walls and open courtyard created intimacy without exclusivity. In 2026, the move to Mnazi Mmoja Grounds marks a significant evolution. The new site offers open space, greenery and sea air-along with practical advantages for crowd flow, safety, accessibility and future growth. Economically, it allows for more vendors, larger audiences and diversified programming. Culturally, it signals continuity without stagnation: the festival grows, but its values remain intact.

Beyond the main stages, Sauti za Busara's fringe programming continues to deepen its impact. The Carnival Parade transforms Stone Town into a moving performance, breaking the boundary between audience and artist. Swahili Encounters brings musicians from different countries together to rehearse and perform collaborative sets, prioritising process over spectacle. Industry platforms such as Movers & Shakers create space for professional dialogue, an often-overlooked pillar of sustainable creative economies.

The festival also extends beyond Stone Town through Busara Plus, a free community stage hosted in Fumba Town Nyamanzi. This decentralisation of access reinforces the idea that culture should circulate, not concentrate. For younger audiences and first-tim performers, it offers exposure without financial barriers economically modest, but culturally significant.

Gender inclusion remains equally deliberate. Women are visible not only as performers, but as organisers, administrators, producers and technicians. In an industry where women's labour is often under credited, Sauti za Busara quietly models a different standard-where visibility becomes policy, and representation becomes practice.

The Mnazi Mmoja grounds, will host multiple stages, shaded open-air areas beneath centuries-old trees, an expanded food and craft market, professional networking spaces, and improved accessibility for pedestrians, public transport and vehicles.

Demand for the 2026 edition has reached record levels. Early Bird tickets have sold out completely, with Advance Tickets now selling at a rapid pace, driven by a world-class lineup featuring over 400 musicians from 21 countries across Africa and the globe. Headlining the festival is Malian music icon Salif Keita, whose enduring legacy and recent viral global hit "Yamore "have captivated both long-time fans and a new generation of listeners worldwide.

"The combination of an expanded venue, an exceptional lineup led by Salif Keita, and growing international interest has made this one of the most anticipated editions in our history. Working closely with the Government of Zanzibar and relevant authorities has allowed us to safely scale the festival to meet this demand."

Beyond the music, Sauti za Busara 2026 continues to distinguish itself through its strong social and cultural impact. The first 'Inspire to Lead!' activation was successfully held on 17 January 2026, at Kibanda Maiti Grounds drawing strong participation and positive engagement. The programme will continue throughout the festival period, delivered in partnership with the Government of Zanzibar, European Union, and the UN Women. These activations form part of the Gender Transformative Action Programme, which focuses on ending violence against women and girls, advancing women's leadership, and promoting initiatives such as Tokomeza Vitendo vya Ukatili dhidi ya Wanawake na Watoto and Rijali Anajali.

"Our platform allows us to reach thousands of people through culture," said Zakialulu Mdemu, Programmes Officer at Busara Promotions. "By integrating these activations into the festival experience, we help amplify awareness of One-Stop Gender Centres and essential support services offered by the Government of Zanzibar, while celebrating leadership, resilience and equality."

In parallel, Busara Promotions reports overwhelming interest in its GenderWork Tanzania initiative, having received 179 applications from 11 countries. The programme focuses on training women in technical and professional roles within the live music and events industry, including stage management, production, and artist liaison. Implemented in partnership with the Music In Africa Foundation and funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (UNESCO), the project has already trained 30.

women over the past five years through it Amplifying Women's Voices project, many now active professionals in the sector.
