MWALIMU NYERERE FOUNDATION TO CONVENE NATIONAL DIALOGUE ON PEACE, UNITY AND DEVELOPMENT

Dar es Salaam.

The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation has organized a national dialogue conference on Peace, Unity, Justice and Development in Tanzania, scheduled to take place on January 22, 2026, at the Foundation’s Conference Hall in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking to journalists today in Dar es Salaam, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, Joseph Waryoba Butiku, said the dialogue aims to provide an opportunity for elders to discuss and give their views on the foundational principles laid down by the Founders of the Nation, which enabled Tanzania to maintain peace, unity and hope for sustainable development.

“We are inviting elders here to the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation because Mwalimu greatly believed in the role of elders. And when we say elders, we do not mean positions; even if one is a Bishop, once here we shall speak as elders,” said Butiku.

He explained that participants in the meeting will be elders in the broader sense — people of wisdom and integrity from various social groups, including religious leaders, academics, retired elders, women, youth, political parties, the media sector and civil society organizations.

Butiku said the importance of organizing the dialogue has been prompted by incidents of violence and breaches of peace that occurred during and after the General Election of the President, Members of Parliament and Councillors held on October 29, 2025.

“These are matters we are discussing because of what we witnessed on October 29. We were told that our children fought with the police, and we were told to stay indoors. Throughout that period, we did not hear the voices of politicians,” he said.

He added that those incidents signaled a weakening of the foundations of the rule of law, and that the nation found itself in mourning without a collective voice, a situation that compelled the President to establish a Commission of Inquiry.

Butiku emphasized that the President also called for the establishment of a patriotism and ethics forum to help strengthen the foundations of the nation by upholding the philosophy and vision of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, including the agenda of peace and security, morality and nationalism, self-reliance, as well as promoting development, particularly through the agricultural sector.
