The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and Tourism, chaired by Hon. Timotheo Mzanva (MP), has commended the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) for its innovation in conservation and tourism, which has resulted in a significant increase in tourist numbers and government revenue. The commendation was given after the Committee received a presentation on the implementation of the institution’s duties.
TAWA’s report was presented today, January 21, 2026, in Dodoma by the Acting Commissioner for Conservation, Mlage Yussuf Kabange, on behalf of the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), as part of the Ministry’s ongoing exercise of presenting reports from its institutions to the Parliamentary Committee.
In his presentation, Commissioner Kabange informed the Committee that TAWA manages a total area of 133,286.36 square kilometres, comprising 28 Game Reserves, 23 Game Controlled Areas, 2 Antiquities Sites, 5 Government Wildlife Ranches, Makuyuni Wildlife Park and Lundo Island. He noted that strengthened protection efforts and anti-poaching operations have contributed to an increase in wildlife populations in these areas.
He further explained the efforts being undertaken to resolve boundary conflicts between protected areas and community settlements, stating that through collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, TAMISEMI, and regional and district authorities, TAWA has successfully installed 3,192 boundary beacons and paid compensation to citizens who gave up land for conservation purposes, particularly in the Kilombero Game Reserve.
In a move to increase revenue and strengthen conservation, the Committee was informed about the establishment of Makuyuni Wildlife Park, an initiative that has enhanced security, improved infrastructure and attracted tourism investors. The park contributed more than TZS 315 million in revenue during the 2024/25 financial year.
Additionally, Kabange told the Committee that TAWA has so far signed 13 strategic investment agreements and three accommodation service investment contracts, which are expected to generate an average of USD 27,111,329 per year for the Government. During the 2024/25 financial year alone, TZS 12.2 billion was collected from these agreements.
On community involvement, TAWA has continued to engage residents living around conservation areas in various conservation-related economic activities, including beekeeping and fishing. Dividends and benefits worth more than TZS 22.63 billion have been distributed to beneficiaries from tourism-related activities.
The Acting Commissioner also informed the Committee that hunting tourism has improved following policy reforms that allow year-round hunting and extended concession periods. Meanwhile, photographic tourism has recorded a remarkable increase in visitor numbers, from 37,684 in 2020/21 to 240,967 in 2024/25.
In concluding the session, the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Timotheo Mzanva (MP), commended the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and its institutions, stating that TAWA’s achievements demonstrate the importance of investment and innovation in protecting national resources and increasing revenue through the tourism sector.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon.
