MINISTRY OF ENERGY TO COLLABORATE WITH THE MEAT BOARD TO PROMOTE THE USE OF CLEAN COOKING ENERGY.

📌 The goal is to ensure meat roasters at livestock markets use clean cooking energy

📌 A call issued to banks to provide low-interest loans to meat roasters

The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Tanzania Meat Board, has developed a special program to encourage meat roasters at various livestock markets across the country to adopt clean cooking energy. The initiative aims to reduce the use of environmentally unfriendly energy sources while protecting the health of meat roasters and the wider community.

Speaking during his visit to a clean cooking energy stakeholder, Matima Investment, in Kibaha District, Coast Region, the Director of Clean Cooking Energy from the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Nolasco Mlay, said the stakeholder is involved in manufacturing special gas-powered meat roasting stoves that are environmentally friendly and safe for human health.

During the visit, Mr. Mlay met with experts from the Tanzania Meat Board and the Regional Manager of CRDB Bank, where they discussed various strategies to ensure that all meat roasting markets nationwide transition to modern stoves that use clean energy.

“Clean cooking energy not only protects the environment but also improves health and increases efficiency in the activities of meat roasters. Through collaboration with the Tanzania Meat Board, we will continue to encourage meat roasters at various markets to use clean energy, as the board is responsible for regulating and developing stakeholders in the meat sector,” said Mr. Mlay.

He further called on development partners, particularly financial institutions and banks, to support meat roasters by providing low-interest loans to enable them to afford the cost of purchasing modern stoves. This step will help entrepreneurs move away from the use of firewood and charcoal and instead adopt clean and environmentally friendly technologies.

On her part, the CRDB Bank Coast Region Manager, Ms. Rose Kazimoto, said the bank is ready to collaborate with meat roasters and clean cooking stove manufacturers to increase the production and use of clean cooking energy.

She noted that CRDB will explore the best ways to enable meat roasters to access loans, a move that will help protect the environment and improve their health.

However, she emphasized the importance of meat roasters registering with the Tanzania Meat Board and operating in an organized manner to facilitate monitoring and access to loans.

Ms. Kazimoto added that due to the mobile nature of many meat roasters, it is advisable for them to form groups that remain active for at least three years. She noted that the Loliondo Market is already well organized and meets the criteria for accessing loans from CRDB Bank.

Meanwhile, the Clean Cooking Energy Desk Officer from the Tanzania Meat Board, Ms. Pendo Msaki, said the board has continued to promote the use of clean cooking energy in meat markets across the country.

She explained that the Tanzania Meat Board is in the final stages of preparing a directive to ban the use of firewood and charcoal in meat markets, a move aimed at protecting the environment and improving the health of meat roasters.

She also urged all meat roasters to register with the Tanzania Meat Board to obtain certification and formal recognition.

She added that the board will begin distributing clean energy stoves on credit at the Loliondo–Kibaha markets as well as Pugu in Dar es Salaam, as part of the implementation of the program.
