KISHAPU SOLAR POWER PROJECT NEARING COMPLETION – DEPUTY MINISTER SALOME MAKAMBA.
📌 Says a total of 50 megawatts will be connected to the National Grid
📌 Commends H.E. the President for major investments in power projects
The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has said that the solar power project located in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region, is nearing completion, with a total of 50 megawatts expected to be injected into the National Grid to strengthen electricity supply in Shinyanga and neighboring regions.
Hon. Salome made the remarks on January 9, 2026, during her inspection tour of power projects in Shinyanga Region, including the Kishapu Solar Power Project, the expansion of the Ibadakuli Substation, and the construction of the power transmission line from Ibadakuli to Simiyu Region.
She said that the Kishapu Solar Power Project has so far reached more than 89 percent completion and is expected to be finalized by the end of this month, as part of the Government’s major efforts to ensure the country has sufficient electricity to promote economic opportunities and sustainable development.
“This project has reached more than 89 percent completion, and we expect that by the end of this month, 50 megawatts will be connected to the National Grid. This is part of the Government’s continued efforts to ensure Tanzania has adequate power supply and a strong transmission and distribution network,” emphasized Hon. Salome.
Speaking at the Ibadakuli Substation Expansion Project, which has reached 44.32 percent completion, the Deputy Minister said the project is very important as it will have the capacity to supply electricity to the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as well as to neighboring countries of Kenya and Uganda.
“We thank and commend H.E. the President for providing funds for the expansion of the Ibadakuli Substation. It is a great honor for us because this substation will serve the strategic SGR project, while also enabling power transmission to neighboring countries, Kenya and Uganda,” she explained.
Speaking about the construction of the 220kV power transmission line from Ibadakuli to Simiyu, the Acting Director of Projects at TANESCO, Engineer Frank Mashalo, said the objective of the project is to strengthen electricity supply in Simiyu Region and neighboring areas. He said the project has reached 53 percent completion and is expected to be completed in June this year.
On his part, the Kishapu District Commissioner, Hon. Peter Masindi, said completion of the project will stimulate production activities and economic growth for Kishapu residents, the majority of whom engage in cotton farming, which requires reliable electricity for processing and production.
The Kishapu Solar Power Project is being implemented at a total cost of TZS 323 billion for both phases. The project officially began in December 2023 and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2026.
