The Minister for Energy, Hon. Deogratius Ndejembi, has said that the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has invested over TZS 280 billion in various electricity projects to ensure reliable power supply in the city of Dar es Salaam.

Hon. Ndejembi made the remarks on January 6, 2025, during his visit to the Gongo la Mboto, Kinyerezi I Extension and Mabibo power receiving and cooling substations in Dar es Salaam.

“Dar es Salaam is among the areas with the highest electricity consumption in the country. If you look at the electricity generation capacity we currently have, nearly 750 megawatts are consumed in Dar es Salaam alone. This government investment is aimed at ensuring reliable power supply for both household consumers and industries so that they can continue to grow,” said Hon. Ndejembi.

He added that the investment also aims to eliminate reliance on a single substation and instead establish sufficient substations that will completely address power challenges whenever a fault occurs at any one station.

“The Government’s objective with this investment is to ensure that Dar es Salaam has a ring circuit system, so that when power is lost on one side, it can be supplied through another route. This will enable residents of Dar es Salaam and neighboring areas to enjoy reliable electricity at all times,” he added.

On his part, the Managing Director of TANESCO, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said that the more than TZS 280 billion invested in Dar es Salaam is part of over TZS 15 trillion provided by the Sixth Phase Government to implement various electricity generation, transmission and distribution projects nationwide.

“Her Excellency the President has directed us that she does not want the electricity sector to be seen as an obstacle to people’s development. We thank her for enabling us, and all these efforts are aimed at ensuring that electricity continues to be an enabling sector for business, investment and service delivery,” said Mr. Twange.

The Minister’s visit is part of his ongoing nationwide tours of electricity projects, aimed at assessing their progress and ensuring they are completed on time so that Tanzanians continue to enjoy reliable electricity services.
