Elders Under Nyerere Foundation Launch National Dialogue to Strengthen Justice, Unity and Peace After 2025 General Election Violence.
Dar es Salaam.
Elders under the auspices of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation have officially launched a national dialogue initiative aimed at strengthening justice, unity and peace, following the tragedies linked to the October 29, 2025 General Election and the events that unfolded afterward.
The dialogue was launched as elders extended their condolences to all Tanzanians who lost their loved ones, were injured, or lost their property as a result of incidents of violence that occurred in various parts of the country during and after the election.
Speaking at the opening of the dialogue, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, Joseph Waryoba Butiku, said the incidents resulted in deaths, injuries and destruction of both public and private property, creating widespread fear among citizens.
He said the situation has undermined the foundations of national peace, unity and solidarity, and disrupted social and economic activities, including citizens’ efforts to seek employment and improve their livelihoods.
“These events have begun to create signs of division and mutual accusations, particularly within the political context, a situation that is unhealthy for the well-being of our nation,” said Butiku.
According to the elders, the dialogue aims to provide an opportunity to deeply reflect on the root causes of the conflicts that emerged, listen to diverse views, and lay the groundwork for recommendations that will help restore public trust, strengthen national cohesion and build lasting peace.
The elders noted that they recognize the existence of social, political and economic challenges, including unemployment, low incomes and limited access to social services, which have been among the sources of public grievances.
They further emphasized that the dialogue is not intended to apportion blame, but rather to seek genuine solutions through wisdom, reconciliation and broad stakeholder participation.
However, they also called on Tanzanians to be responsible and to hold those who fail to fulfill their responsibilities accountable in accordance with the Constitution, laws and regulations, to put national interests first, and to work together to resolve challenges and conflicts peacefully.
