ELDERS ISSUE STRONG RESOLUTIONS ON PEACE, CONSTITUTION AND RECONCILIATION FOLLOWING THE 2025 GENERAL ELECTION
Dar es Salaam
Elders from the regions of Tanga, Arusha, Mara, Kagera (Bukoba), Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, under the facilitation of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF), have issued strong national resolutions aimed at strengthening peace, unity, justice and national cohesion following the violence and tragedies that occurred on and after the 2025 General Election.
Speaking at the closing of the dialogue, the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation’s Programme Coordinator, Dr Musuto Chirangi, said the elders were deeply saddened by the acts of violence that resulted in loss of life, destruction of property and widespread fear among citizens, as well as reports of people being abducted, disappearing or being killed.
He said the situation had undermined the foundations of peace, unity and national solidarity, and disrupted citizens’ ability to fully participate in economic activities and national development.
“We, the elders, convey our condolences to all Tanzanians, especially families affected by deaths and destruction of property. We mourn with you and call for patience as we await the full report of the Commission of Inquiry,” said Dr Chirangi.
Call regarding deaths and destruction
In their resolutions, the elders urged citizens to remain calm as the Commission of Inquiry continues its work, while advising the Government to release a comprehensive and transparent report on the deaths, destruction of property and damage to infrastructure.
They further called on the Government, once the full report is released, to officially console the victims, provide medical and psychological support, and ensure legal action is taken against all those found to have violated the law.
Renewed push for constitutional reforms
The elders also called for the re-launch of an inclusive, independent and transparent process to reform the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, as pledged by the President in Parliament.
They emphasized that the process should follow a clear timetable culminating in a national referendum, and should ensure the separation of state powers and activities from those of political parties.
“The Constitution is the supreme law and the compass of the nation. All citizens must fully participate in deciding how we want to live and be governed,” the statement stressed.
Patriotism, justice and accountability
In their third resolution, the elders called on every Tanzanian to put national interests above personal, party or group interests.
They stressed that no one is above the law, and that leaders must be held accountable, transparency in the management of resources must be ensured, and oversight institutions must function effectively.
The Government was also urged to continue upholding justice and equality of citizens, including releasing, through legal procedures, prisoners or detainees arrested for political reasons.
In addition, the elders encouraged Tanzanians to support local products and professionals, and to avoid overreliance on foreigners or external powers to solve their challenges, citing the philosophy of self-reliance advocated by the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Peace, reconciliation and youth employment
On peacebuilding and reconciliation, the elders recognized the challenge of unemployment and low incomes, especially among the youth, stressing the importance of nurturing young people in ethics, patriotism and productivity.
They proposed the establishment of a National Reconciliation Commission composed of widely respected, patriotic and upright members, led by a non-partisan citizen.
They also called for the condemnation of all forms of discriminatory acts and statements, and instead encouraged dialogue, genuine reconciliation and listening to one another rather than violent demonstrations.
On employment, they recommended improving the national employment policy, reforming education curricula to match labour market needs, expanding the private sector, and establishing a National Youth Council to unite young people regardless of political ideology.
Final call to Tanzanians
In their conclusion, the elders called on all Tanzanians to be responsible and to hold accountable those who fail to act responsibly in accordance with the Constitution and the law; to place national interests above personal or group interests; and to work together in unity to resolve challenges and conflicts peacefully.
The resolutions were issued by elders from Tanga, Arusha, Mara, Bukoba, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam under the facilitation of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation.
