The Board of Directors of the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) has been commended for its creativity in executing its duties, which has led to notable achievements in wildlife conservation and tourism in the country.
The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ashatu Kijaji, made the remarks today, January 8, 2026, in Arusha City while receiving the end-of-term performance report of the outgoing TAWA Board of Directors.
Dr. Kijaji said the Board’s innovative approach in carrying out its responsibilities aligns with the vision of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, on sustainable conservation of natural heritage for the benefit of future generations and the nation at large.
She added that, among other achievements, the Board facilitated an increase in investors and revenue, leading to strengthened conservation efforts, reduced encroachment in protected areas and game reserves, and improved use of technology, despite the presence of areas that still require improvement.
Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr. Nkoba Mabula, assured Minister Kijaji that his office will work on the submitted report to further enhance efficiency in conservation and tourism through TAWA and other conservation institutions in the country.
While thanking the Ministry’s leadership for strong cooperation, the Board Chairperson, Retired Major General Hamis Semfuko, said other achievements include improving rapid response to incidents involving dangerous and destructive wildlife through patrols conducted by TAWA special units in collaboration with Village Game Scouts (VGS).
He further added that during the period under review, TAWA received unqualified audit opinions for three consecutive years due to strong management of internal control systems, and strengthened community participation in conservation through community-based projects, fishing and beekeeping initiatives in protected areas, as well as the provision of dividends to beneficiaries.
