The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has officially launched a rural electrification project in various hamlets of Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region, emphasizing that the Government will continue implementing the vision of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure all citizens have access to reliable electricity.

Speaking during the launch ceremony in Siha District, Hon. Makamba said that in addition to connecting households to electricity, the Ministry of Energy is also ensuring that public institutions—particularly schools—are connected to the national grid in order to improve teaching and learning environments.

During the event, the Deputy Minister officially switched on electricity in Ngare-Nairobi Hamlet and explained that the project has started in that area, but across Siha District alone the Government plans to connect 5,000 households to electricity by 2030. So far, 3,000 households have already been connected.

In another development, Hon. Salome Makamba stated that Tanzania is steadily implementing the Mission 300 programme, which aims to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030. The programme seeks to ensure that all citizens in Tanzania are connected to electricity by that year.

“Through the Mission 300 programme, TANESCO targets to connect 1,700,000 citizens to electricity each year. In Kilimanjaro Region alone, the target is to connect 12,000 citizens annually, and so far more than 9,000 residents in the region have already gained access to electricity,” she said.

On his part, the TANESCO Regional Manager for Kilimanjaro, Mr. Merry Kabakuzi, said that Siha District has a total of 169 hamlets, of which 155 already have electricity, while the remaining 14 hamlets are included in the Rural Energy Agency (REA) Phase II infill electrification programme.

He added that areas with limited electricity coverage will continue to be upgraded through the Mission 300 special programme to ensure full access to electricity services.
