Msigwa Commends TCRA for Nurturing Bloggers and Online Journalists.

Dar es Salaam, December 18, 2025 —

The Sixth Phase Government has continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to nurturing and empowering online journalists and bloggers, rather than addressing them through punitive measures, with the aim of building a strong, productive, and professional media industry in Tanzania.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, who is also the Government Chief Spokesperson, Mr. Gerson Msigwa, commended the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) for adopting a supportive and developmental approach toward stakeholders in the media sector instead of imposing harsh disciplinary actions.

Msigwa said the approach aligns with the philosophy of the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, which emphasizes collaboration with various stakeholders for the benefit of the nation.

He cited the Tanzania Bloggers Network (TBN) and the Tanzania Digital Platforms Forum (JUMIKITA) as key government partners in the media sector, stressing that their contribution is vital in disseminating information and strengthening communication between the government and citizens.

“The government has trusted online journalists, and now you should continue to demonstrate trust in the government. Our cooperation has continued to grow stronger, and whenever challenges arise, we address them together,” said Msigwa.

Refuting claims that online journalists are weak or ineffective, Msigwa said they are performing their duties professionally and have a significant role to play in nation-building through responsible use of their platforms.

“I have consistently emphasized that journalists should use their pens to build the nation. You are doing the right work and safeguarding national interests,” he added.

Msigwa assured journalists of the government’s protection, stating that if any laws, regulations, or policies are found to hinder their work, they will be reviewed and amended in the broader national interest.

He also announced the commencement of preparations for training programs for journalists in collaboration with TCRA, urging them to embrace the initiative positively as part of enhancing professionalism and skills development.

On taxation issues, Msigwa said the government will continue working closely with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to resolve challenges facing online journalists, acknowledging their role in promoting the country and attracting investment.

Furthermore, he revealed that the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports is in the process of establishing a special fund aimed at empowering journalists, particularly those operating online.

Addressing the current global environment, Msigwa noted that modern-day conflicts have shifted from conventional military weapons to information warfare, emphasizing the critical responsibility of the media in protecting and promoting the country.

He urged journalists to ensure their platforms are used to safeguard national interests and cautioned against misuse of social media that could damage Tanzania’s image.

However, Msigwa expressed concern over the tendency of some journalists to remain silent when they are disrespected, calling on them to stand firm and defend the dignity and integrity of their profession.
