MECIRA Stresses Responsible Use of Freedom of Expression, Calls for Preservation of Peace.

Dar es Salaam.

Freedom of expression is a constitutional right for every Tanzanian, but it must be exercised with responsibility, in line with moral values, the law and the broader national interest.

This was emphasized by the Media Center for Resource and Information Defenders (MECIRA) in its call for citizens to continue safeguarding peace, national unity and social harmony.

Speaking to journalists on December 17, 2025 in Dar es Salaam, MECIRA Chairperson, Habibu Mchange, said that peace in Tanzania is a precious national asset that must be protected by all citizens.

He noted that MECIRA will continue to use civic, diplomatic and legal means to ensure the country is safeguarded against violence, dangerous propaganda and social divisions.

“We will continue to employ civic, diplomatic and legal approaches to ensure that Tanzania is protected from violence, harmful propaganda and social fragmentation,” said Mchange.

He further warned against the misuse of freedom of expression that violates ethics and the law, noting that such actions could undermine peace and national cohesion. He stressed that this constitutional right must go hand in hand with accountability and respect for the collective interests of society and the nation.

However, Mchange called on leaders and all stakeholders to use peaceful means, particularly dialogue and established legal mechanisms, in addressing existing challenges. He underscored the importance of respecting democracy, human rights and the rule of law as key pillars for sustaining peace, unity and national stability.
