MECIRA Chair Condemns Politicians’ Remarks Seen as Threat to Tanzania’s Sovereignty
Dar es Salaam
The Chairperson of the Media Centre for Advocates of National Resources (MECIRA), Habibu Mchange, has strongly condemned statements by some political leaders allegedly seeking to push Tanzania back into systems resembling colonialism or modern-day servitude.
Speaking today, December 12, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Mchange said such remarks are dangerous to the nation’s future and should be openly denounced by all Tanzanians who value freedom, dignity, and the country’s national interests.
Mchange was responding to arguments raised by the Vice Chairperson of CHADEMA, John Heche, following a recent statement issued by the party. He stressed that political debate should be grounded in safeguarding and advancing national interests, rather than promoting views that could undermine the foundations of the country’s independence.
He added that MECIRA, as an institution bringing together journalists and defenders of national resources, has a responsibility to remind all politicians that national interests must always take precedence over personal or partisan political interests.
“When we speak as leaders or political activists, we must remember that Tanzania belongs to all Tanzanians. Our statements should build the nation, not take it backwards,” Mchange said.
He called on politicians to use constructive language, respect the principles of independence and patriotism, and contribute to debates that focus on sustainable development.
