MAJOR GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT IN MLIMANI NATURAL GAS FILLING STATION BRINGS RELIEF TO CITIZENS
📌 The station can fill up to 800 vehicles and motorcycles per day
📌 Hon. Salome Makamba urges the private sector to invest more in natural gas
📌 New natural gas stations planned for Morogoro, Dodoma, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Tanga
The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has stated that the Government has made a significant investment in constructing a natural gas filling station for transportation vehicles in the Mlimani area of Dar es Salaam, with more than TSh 12 billion invested in completing the facility. The station has the capacity to serve up to 800 small vehicles and motorcycles each day.
Hon. Salome made these remarks on November 12, 2025, in Dar es Salaam during her inspection visit to the station, which is managed by GASCO, a subsidiary of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC).
She emphasized that the Government of Tanzania, under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is committed to ensuring that the nation’s resources benefit its people in various ways.
“Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has significantly reduced the cost of living for transport operators. One kilogram of gas costs TSh 1,500, and with a 17-kilogram cylinder, one can travel up to 50 kilometers. This clearly shows that gas is more affordable than fuel. With the large number of commercial vehicles and motorcycles in Dar es Salaam, this investment has created a great opportunity for these operators by reducing operational costs and increasing their income,” she said.
She further noted that by June 2026, additional gas stations will be constructed along all major roads in Dar es Salaam. She also stressed that the Government has begun developing major stations in the regions of Morogoro, Dodoma, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Tanga, which will not only serve residents of those regions but also benefit neighboring areas.
Hon. Salome urged the private sector to scale up investment in natural gas infrastructure, noting that the demand for affordable energy is rising rapidly in the country. She highlighted that the Government has improved the investment climate through Public–Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks, especially the One-Stop Centre model, which simplifies access to services.
She added that the Government continues to prioritize youth empowerment, noting that the gas and petroleum sector directly benefits young people working in transport services such as Bolt drivers and motorcycle riders, as the cost of operation becomes much lower.
TPDC’s Managing Director, Mr. Mussa Makame, stated that the Mlimani gas filling station has the capacity to fill up to 70,000 kilograms of gas, although it currently dispenses 50,000 kilograms daily to motorcycles, small cars, and larger vehicles.
“In the past, before this Government-owned station was built, customers used private stations where they spent up to three hours waiting. Now it takes only four minutes to refuel. Each day, the station serves 800 small vehicles and motorcycles, in addition to 15 trucks supplying gas to smaller stations,” he said.
He added that in collaboration with the private sector, the Government will ensure that by 2026, Dar es Salaam will have 15 major gas filling stations, as well as additional stations in the regions of Coast, Morogoro, Dodoma, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Tanga.
Beneficiaries of natural gas expressed their gratitude to the Government for initiating the project and improving infrastructure. They noted that previously, they spent long hours waiting to get gas, but now they can refuel quickly—saving time, reducing operational costs, and increasing their earnings.
