GOVERNMENT PRIORITIZES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, SPONSORS TOP STUDENTS ABROAD THROUGH SAMIA SCHOLARSHIP
The government has intensified efforts to promote the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to its importance in national security, the economy, banking systems, agriculture, and technological advancement.
As part of this strategy, it has begun preparing top-performing students for overseas studies under the Samia Scholarship Extended program.
Speaking to the media today, December 10, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adolf Mkenda, said the government continues to improve incentives for students pursuing science subjects to ensure the nation produces enough experts in critical areas.
Professor Mkenda noted that the Samia Scholarship Extended has been expanded to include selected postgraduate programs, particularly in strategic fields such as nuclear science. He emphasized that this move aims to produce specialists who will help the country utilize its resources effectively while boosting national academic and technological capacity.
He explained that, given the global significance of artificial intelligence, the government has identified the best-performing students to undertake international studies in this field. According to Professor Mkenda, 50 students have already been selected and are currently undergoing preparatory training at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha.
After completing the preparatory program, the students are expected to travel at the end of January to Johannesburg, South Africa, where they will begin their studies as the first cohort of beneficiaries under the enhanced scholarship program.
Professor Mkenda emphasized that these government initiatives are part of long-term strategies to build a nation well-equipped in science, technology, and innovation, while strengthening the country’s capacity to achieve scientific and economic development.
