EXPANSION OF KINYEREZI I EXTENSION POWER RECEIVING AND DISTRIBUTION SUBSTATION COMPLETED – DEPUTY MINISTER SALOME

📌 To strengthen electricity supply in Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto

📌 Testing underway; Appreciation extended to President Samia for major investment

The Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Salome Makamba, has announced the official completion of the expansion project at the Kinyerezi I Extension Power Receiving and Distribution Substation, which includes the installation of a 175 MVA transformer.

She stated that this milestone is crucial in improving the reliability of electricity supply in Dar es Salaam, particularly in Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto—areas that have been experiencing frequent power interruptions due to population growth and increased economic activities.

Hon. Salome made the remarks on December 11, 2025, during her visit to the Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi II, Ubungo I, Ubungo II, and Ubungo III power generation plants. She added that the project has already entered its testing phase.

“We are very grateful to H.E. President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for this major investment. The transformers have been installed, testing is ongoing, and residents of Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala will now enjoy a more stable power supply,” said Hon. Salome.

For his part, TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, noted that the utility continues to upgrade its infrastructure to meet the rapidly increasing demand.

He revealed that a large 175 MVA transformer has been installed at Kinyerezi, while Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala are being supplied through a newly installed 120 MVA transformer to accommodate the rising electricity needs.

He emphasized that Dar es Salaam’s population has been growing significantly, making continuous infrastructure upgrades essential to match the existing demand.

“The purpose of the Kinyerezi I Extension project was to increase the capacity to distribute generated electricity to our customers at the required levels,” said Mr. Twange.
