The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, has directed the contractor responsible for constructing the Tanzania Gemology Centre (TGC) training facility to expedite the project by increasing manpower and working around the clock to ensure timely completion.
Speaking today, December 12, 2025, during his inspection tour of the project in Arusha, Minister Mavunde emphasized that the contractor must strictly adhere to quality standards and contractual requirements throughout the construction process.
He explained that the Government of the Sixth Phase, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is fully committed to strengthening the entire value chain of gemstone beneficiation, in line with the 2009 Mineral Policy.
Minister Mavunde added that the commencement of this construction is a direct implementation of directives issued by President Samia during her address to the 13th Parliament in Dodoma.
According to the Minister, completion of the center will bring multiple benefits, including an increase in student enrollment, the production of more skilled gemstone value-addition experts, the creation of more job opportunities for youth and gemstone traders, and the reduction of raw gemstone exports — ultimately boosting national revenue.
Arusha District Commissioner, Hon. Joseph Mkude, assured that his office will continue monitoring progress to ensure the project is completed in accordance with government expectations. He emphasized that the center marks a major government investment in the mineral sector within the region.
Earlier, providing progress updates, TGC Center Manager Eng. Ally Maganga stated that the construction of the two twin eight-storey buildings will cost TSh 33 billion. Upon completion, the facilities are expected to expand opportunities for youth to acquire skills necessary for employment in the gemstone value addition industry.
Project Manager Eng. Robert Lubuva also pledged that the contractors will scale up workforce and equipment to ensure the project is completed on schedule and begins serving Tanzanians promptly.
