The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has signed contracts for the installation of clean cooking energy infrastructure in 52 secondary schools and one VETA college across the country.
The signing ceremony was presided over by REA’s Director General, Eng. Hassan Saidy, today, December 4, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, together with representatives from TAIFA Gas Ltd and Hanny G Ltd. The event marks the beginning of the first phase of implementing a nationwide initiative to equip institutions serving more than 100 people with clean cooking energy systems.
“Today’s event is a continuation of the implementation of the Clean Cooking Energy Strategy, launched by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, on May 8, 2024. It also aligns with the Government’s 2024 directive prohibiting the use of firewood and charcoal in all institutions serving over 100 people,” said Eng. Saidy.
Eng. Saidy explained that the project will deploy clean cooking energy systems to 52 secondary schools and one VETA college, further promoting the adoption of clean energy solutions across the country.
He added that the project will benefit 2,192 teachers and 54,405 students, and will be implemented across 18 regions. He noted that this initiative is part of ongoing Government efforts through REA to ensure that institutions transition to clean and safe cooking energy.
REA’s Director of Renewable and Alternative Energy Technologies, Eng. Advera Mwijage, stated that the project is valued at TZS 5.8 billion, benefiting the mentioned 52 secondary schools and one VETA college.
“The systems to be installed include LPG units ranging from one to two tonnes, LPG-powered cooking pots of 50 to 300 litres, improved charcoal alternative cooking pots of the same capacity, as well as the procurement of alternative charcoal for all benefiting institutions,” said Eng. Mwijage.
She added that REA has already installed systems in two schools in Simiyu and Ruvuma regions, and installation at Ruhinda Secondary School in Kagera is currently underway.
Meanwhile, TAIFA Gas Sales Manager, Mosses Massawe, expressed gratitude to President Samia for prioritizing support to institutions to shift from unsafe and unclean energy sources to clean cooking energy.
