The Governments of Tanzania and Qatar today, 24 November 2025, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates during a signing ceremony held in London. The event took place on the sidelines of the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly and was attended by leaders and various stakeholders in the maritime sector.

On behalf of Tanzania, the MoU was signed by the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Malick Salum, while Eng. Abdulaziz Abdullah Al-Sulait, the Deputy Undersecretary of Qatar’s Ministry of Transport, signed on behalf of his country.

Through this MoU, both parties aim to enhance standards of competence, safety, and quality in the seafaring profession, while strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Tanzania and Qatar.

The agreement is expected to increase employment opportunities for Tanzanian seafarers on vessels registered or operated by Qatari companies, as they will no longer be required to undergo additional certificate verification procedures. It will also deepen cooperation between the two countries in the maritime transport sector.

Additionally, the MoU will enable seafarers to access better working conditions and more competitive job opportunities in high-demand markets. It will also promote the transfer of international skills and expertise, as Tanzanian seafarers engage with advanced technologies and safety standards on Qatari vessels. Furthermore, the agreement is set to boost Tanzania’s capacity in maritime training, as its institutions and certifications gain wider international recognition.
