The Minister for Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde (MP), has visited and witnessed the implementation of advanced mineral exploration using drone technology in Basotu Ward, Hanang District, Manyara Region. The geophysical survey aims to identify areas with mineral deposits that could lead to the establishment of a major gold mine in the district.
The visit is part of the implementation of directives issued by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, during her address to Parliament on October 13, 2025, where she emphasized mineral exploration as a national priority for the period 2025–2030, targeting at least 50% deep mineral exploration nationwide by 2030.
Speaking during the visit, Minister Mavunde said the exploration marks a significant step toward the development of the people of Hanang and the Manyara Region at large, as its outcomes are expected to increase employment opportunities, attract investment, and stimulate community development projects through mining licences.
“We expect this exploration to bring positive results that will transform the lives of the people. The government will continue to oversee this sector to ensure it becomes a driver of development for all,” said Mavunde.
For her part, the District Commissioner of Hanang, Hon. Almish Hazal, thanked Minister Mavunde for visiting the project area and reiterated the importance of mineral surveys in her district. She also requested the Ministry of Minerals to extend similar efforts to other parts of Hanang with mineral potential.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Cobra Resources Ltd., Mr. Amos Nzungu, applauded Minister Mavunde for his cooperation and patriotism in following up the implementation of mineral exploration projects, and pledged to submit the research findings once the work is complete.
The Manager of SkyPM Solution, the company conducting the survey, Mr. Paul Madata, said the use of drone technology has simplified and increased the efficiency of preliminary exploration, as the equipment can survey depths of more than three kilometers below the earth’s surface in a short time.
Earlier, the Resident Mines Officer for Manyara Region, Engineer Godfrey Nyanda, presented a report on the progress of the mineral sector in the region, noting that by the first quarter of the 2025/26 financial year (July–October), the region had collected 35.21% of the annual target of 2.2 billion shillings.
“We will continue to fully implement the directives of Her Excellency the President and our Minister, Hon. Mavunde, to ensure the mineral sector continues to grow and strengthen here in Manyara,” said Eng. Nyanda.
